The Department of Clinical Microbiology and Applied Technology, Faculty of Medical Technology, Mahidol University was founded in 1968. The Department is located on the 9th floor of Medical Technology building within the compound of Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok Noi, Bangkok. At Salaya campus, the Department is located on the 6th and 7th floor of the Science and Medical Technology Building. The Department provides teachings in Clinical Microbiology, Immunology and Serology, Mycology, Virology and related disciplines for both undergraduate and graduate students as well as personnels in other fields.
The research projects in the department places emphasis on the search for new knowledge in infectious disease, which focuses on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, host-parasite relationships, epidemiology including antibacterial drug resistance. The aim of the research is to develop and to resolve not only problems concerning health but also that concerning with the environment of the country.
The Department is involved with the following research projects:
1. Engineering of Chimeric metal-binding protein
2. Molecular imprinting of compounds of biological and chemical importance
3. Data Mining, Bioinformatics, and Cheminformatics for Biological Applications
4. Manganese Superoxide dismutase in Hepatocellular Carcinoma
5. Molecular diagnosis/identification of bacteria and fungi
6. Molecular detection/identification of drug-resistance gene
7. Pathogenesis of Burkhoderia pseudomallei
8. Anti-microbial resistance in bacteria
9. Development of culture media for food borne pathogens
10. Development of diagnostic test kit The Department also provides the following educational services:
1. Detection of micro-organisms in food products and clinical specimen.
2. The External Quality Assessment Scheme in Clinical Immunology.
3. Provide Technical training for personnel from other sections and also from overseas.
